Thread subject: Whaler Central - Boston Whaler Boat Information and Photos :: Where to mount a fuel filter on a 1986 17 Montauk?

I am taking the plunge and getting a repower for my 1986 17' Montauk in a few months and I want/need to get a fuel filter installed as well (I don't have one now). I looked at the wood diagrams and searched the discussion areas but couldn't find anything directly related. If I interpret the wood drawing directly it looks like the port side of the stern, kind of opposite where the all around light brackets are located on the starboard side would be a good location. Is there a good location? Are there any rules about mounting a fuel filter (ie Height) I should know about? Where are they on most Montauks?
Thanks in advance for your help!

MD,
Take a look at all the Montauk owners personal pages.
Here is one I found that has the fuel/water separator mounted in front of the splashwell.

I am not saying this is good or bad but I have seen many of Montauks with this setup.
You can also buy shorter filters as the one in the photo seems to have the taller filter...
The shorter filter takes up less vertical space if that is any consideration.
Filters are changed every season so using the shorter filter isn't any problem....

Hi MD,
I have mounted one very much like the one noted in Joe's post. So far 2 season, 100's of gallons of fuel and no issues. Mine is mounted just off to the right side. Works fine. I would suggest a 10 micron type to help filter moisture.
Good Luck

That is where i have mine, too, and no complaints. At the time of repowering consider putting the battery in console. check out my set on my personal page.

My Montauk had one right below the motor bolts on the transom (inside the splashwell). I liked it since it kept it away from people and made the rigging clean. Sorry no photos to show.
I agree on moving the battery. Remember to cut the floor of the console so the battery box sits on the deck.

Thank you all for the reccomendations on the location. Does anyone know what this should cost to get a filter system installed from scratch. I just want to make sure I am not getting taken to the cleaners.
Thanks!

Figure $60 for a separator (like
http://www.boatersworld.com/product/3...452128.htm)
Primer bulb is <$10 (goes after the filter, before the engine)
Fuel hose, connectors, sealant, teflon tape etc. $30
I think it would take an hour for a yard, two for a DIY. Not sure what marine installer's hourly rates are in your area.

Hi, here are my 2 cents
I repowered my '79 Montauk in '99 with an 115 Fight. I wanted a clean boat inside so all wires/hoses through one tube into the tunnel. To avoid fuel hoses outside this tube i mounted the filter/water separator in the console.
Battery in console as well but instead of a big hole in console floor i mouned a smal teak block exactly under the floor to support the batt weight.
Sorry, i don't have pictures showing all details.

I mounted my battery in the console when I installed the new tank. The fuel/water separator cost me $47 and took me about 30 mins to install. PS I put the teak cover on the tunnel opening in the back of the boat.
