Nobody has ever removed a fuel tank here....sarcasm
You might want to ask your question, rather than taking a poll. ;)

Admit it was a poorly phrased question, but it got at least one useful answer. I guess what I want to know is whether the foam goes under the tank or just down the sides and if not under the tank, what supports the tank? I haven't read ALL the postings on this site, but I do not recall anyone actually describing the removal of a foamed in, under deck fuel tank.
Thank you for your input.

I removed, and refurbished the polyethlylene tank in my 1979 22 revenge last year. It was a big project, but mostly as a result of the way whaler made the deck on these boats. Pics of the process can be found on my shutterfly site here.

If you are replacing an aluminum tank, the recommendation is to NOT use foam.
Use non-organic material for spacers on the side and front/rear walls.
If you must, foam only the corners.

It is also not recommended to foam in a poly tank due to the expansion of the tank when fuel is added.

Just got my 22 Outrage back last week from tank replacement. I was not there and have no pics to share.
They are a small shop and do lots of Whaler stuff. No foam on the re-install.
Also no large gasketed inspection port where the fuel pick ups attach.
I was unable to see the removed tank as it was left with fabricator as a template.
I may ask to contact that guy just to inform others as to condition.
1989 so you all know.

My experience has been, that the tank only has foam on the sides. You need to have something around the entire tank to help keep water from getting under/around tank. I have pictures of a tank in a 1991 19’ outrage that was replaced in the last month or so.send me an email an I can send you some pictures.

I recently saw a post of somebody who replaced their tank on I think a 22'. It was very detailed with lots of pics. It might be on the "other" Whaler site.

I replaced my tank myself with a FMT. Cut the foam with a saw around the sides and used a 4x4 and a jack on the trailer to pop it out. I tried lifting it out on the ground but it jacked up the entire boat in the air. The bottom foam stuck pretty well. I ran 4 strips of neoprene(I think it was 1/2" thick) length wise from bow to stern to give spacing for water to flow out. Foamed the sides and glassed the top with a channel to get water to the back. Added a drain plug and had the new tanks made a little shorter so I could stick my hand down and get out any water that gets in there.
Over all works great. I would foam the sides to hold it in place really well. Thats a lot of weight to be sloshing around.
The only regret was getting a Florida Marine Tank. I had it cermicoated and they did a horrible job. It started flaking off in 1 month and they did not respond to any emails. A guy here makes them 3/16" and glasses the entire top. Looks nice. Just don't want to be the next guy to replace it.

BTW I would post pics but it is hard to to do on this site unless something recent has changed.
Easiest way to share pics here is to post the pictures to imgur (imgur.com) and then post the link to the imgur album here.
Would love to see your photos. I'm replacing the tank in my Outrage 22 next spring.

The reason for the wobble is you are missing the side shims.
You need to add spacers on the long sides. 3" wide and as deep as the tank side every running foot.
Phenolic (plastic cutting board material) is a good choice. Plastic decking has also been used. Price it out, factoring in the fabrication.
