I read a few recommendations from members here to upgrade to the Morse 'Xtreme' cables when installing new cables. Which I would like to do. A tech from Morse told me they won't work and gave me a list of old style cables and adaptors to fit my 1985 Johnson 70hp.
I should have asked why the "Xtremes won't work but didn't. It seems that Evinrude /Johnson cable ends should fit regardless.
Can anyone tell me why I'm wrong? I am pretending for this discussion that I am from the 'Show me' state.

You were given bad information. I just installed a Morse MT-2 dual control on one of my boats, using the XTREME cables, and they work beautifully, and are super smooth.
You need the Sea Star XTREME universal cables #CCX633. See link. These have universal 10-32 ends on both ends, (which are needed for the control end), and then you install the OMC adaptor kits onto the cables at the engine end.

Adapter kit: (this place is also a good source for the cables themselves)

I run a pair of Merc 200 EFI's on one of these controls and using the XTREME cables, only with the Merc adapter kits instead.
