Just got my 2012 Dauntless 230 and the steering wheel has about an inch of forward backward play. Is that normal or should it be tight? If it’s supposed to be tight what do I do? Thanks

There should be fastners on the backside of the console face.

See this drawing for the console sub-assembly for your year/model from https://www.bostonwhaler.com/boat-ownership/resources

Scroll to the page showing both types of steering.

It should be snug. Tighten it.

The nut is tight. Not sure how to tighten it but it clearly has play in it.

I presume you are referring to the nut on the steering shaft that attaches the wheel.

When the wheel moves, observe the side of the assembly to see if is loose.

Most helms have some play but not an inch. With the cap off the wheel, what is moving? There are usually 3 bolts BEHIND the console that hold the helm on. are these loose? You will probably have to remove he wheel to get the plastic "cup" off and go from there.
