Good afternoon. New BW owner..... I recently purchased a 1985 Montauk 17' that had been sitting unused for some time and the steering is kinda stiff. From what I have read, I can either use a 17' or 18' replacement cable but I am curious if it is a dual cable system and if I should replace just the cables or possibly upgrade to a QC Rotary system. I will be using the boat in a Lake setting if that makes a difference. Thanks in advance for the help....

(corrected to proper name of Montauk 17 for clarification)

Welcome to WC.

It reads like the steering just needs a little maintenance and lubrication.

Use this FAQ as a guide.

A dual cable system is generally used on 150hp and above.

Up to you on if you want to replace the entire steering system or just the cable.

How about a BayStar Hydraulic system?

Thanks very much! Dual or single cable? Rotary or Rack?
