Hey guys, back again after a hiatus. I had just put on a new motor for my 1968 13 and then my wife rode in my buddy 1974 Fabuglas boat and loved the ride. SOO of course i now need to look at bigger better riding boat. Really trying hard to stay with Whalers and will be looking at a 1991 17 Outrage soon. I had a project 1984 18 outrage that will never get done and will be selling someday but i bought the Mils 3/4 top for it and never mounted it. Would the top work on the 17? Is the
1991 17 just shorter in the middle than the
1984 18 or are they really different boats? The Mils would be a good sell to my wife if it would work....
Also is it true about the draft on a 17 outrage is 10 inches?
Cheers...
Erick

I've spent a lot of time in both. I own a 17' outrage I. It is a fantastic boat but it is both shorter and narrower than a classic 18' outrage. As for ride, the narrower beam of the 17 gets my vote. The 17 also gets my vote for power choices, mine is powered quite nicely with a Honda BF 90D. A 115 of appropriate weight might be better but I can ahcieve 40+ mph with three adults aboard. All this said, the 18'outrage is the better boat. The open transom is better, it makes for a much more sea worthy design IMHO. The fact that you do not need a bilge pump is better. Do not get me wrong, I love my seventeen but having spent a lot of time in both, the 18 checks all of the boxes the 17 does and a few more. You can't go wrong with either.
