Does anyone have a 1970's Canadian Boston Whaler Sport 15 with the original compliance notice plate?
I have noticed that the compliance notice on my 1977 appears to have the wrong maximum horsepower noted. The maximum capacity seems fine at 1070 pounds, but the horsepower maximum is noted as 35 horsepower. I was wondering if that was the number that is on all of the boats or if mine slipped through with an error on the notice itself. The US notice is still on the boat but unfortunately it is so worn the numbers are illegible. I wonder if a corrected notice is possible or if I am just looking for trouble.

I thought it was a 1977, but I was just relying on the seller. The stencil number is 5A1911. I believe that the HIN is BWC281177H, though the first three letters are difficult to make out. Maybe the capacity number is in error as well as the HP rating.

The first 3 letters are all the same on Boston Whaler HIN plates.
Boston Whaler Corporation (BWC)
If your HIN is correct, then you have a 15' Whaler hull that was built in March of 1977 as a 1977 year model.
This hull could be in the transitional period of that time.
Could the plate actually show a 75hp instead of 35hp?
Any photos of the stencil and HIN numbers?
Maybe other 1976 owners can show us a photo of their Capacity Plates for reference?

I don't have pictures of the HIN or stencil number right now, but I will try to attach the compliance notice.
I cannot understand the upload process but the compliance notice seems pretty clear in referencing 35 HP maximum power and 1070 pounds maximum capacity.

Okay I think I managed to at least add the compliance notice I have been talking about to my personal page. How insert it into the post itself may be beyond my understanding of how the forum works.

If it was produced at the factory as a tiller model, the max hp would be 35 mph.

The capacity plate restricts the manufacturer from selling the hull with an outboard motor that is exceeds the rating.
Any seller after that can install an outboard motor rated in excess of the plate. It is not illegal. Some insurance companies will decline coverage but many will not.
If you want a reproduction NMMA capacity plate, call Janis at Magic Brush. They reproduce them for Boston Whaler owners.

I think you are making something out of nothing.

I had thought about that, but I was under the impression that the tiller model was rated at 40 hp.
As to worrying about nothing, I am mostly curious as to whether there was a rating difference for Canadian boats or whether the plate on my Whaler was in error. I am wondering if anyone else with a 1970's 15 Sport can let me know what their compliance plate states, again to satisfy my curiosity.

Is there a difference in the US decal depending on year as well? The US decal on my boat looks more like this link, though the numbers are worn off.

The decal Joe links to is the original and what Magic Brush produces.
I have not ever seen the decal in your link.
Is your concern for the decal for restoration efforts, power selection, insurance or documentation?

Phil,
At this point it is my curiosity that would like to be satisfied more than anything.
I started out wondering about law enforcement inspections as I know they do inspections in the local area. If there is an error on the Canadian plate I would assume I could document it for the future. I like to have all my ducks in a row. A compulsive rule follower I guess.

A photo of what you have now would be great documentation and facts for future reference.
Add it to your personal page.
Many of those old decals, tags, plates etc. wear out through the years and make it almost impossible to read or what they even looked like when new.
Some early models had black and silver colored Capacity Plates

Joe,
I added a picture of the US decal to my personal page. (I still can't seem to add them to posts in the forum) As you might see from the decal I added it appears to be purple and silver, though faded enough that the information is not legible. It looks similar to the decal I posted a link to above. Maybe there was a time that the decals were purple?

I think they might rate horsepower differently in Canada. If I remember correctly some of the outboards I bought new over the years had two ratings for horsepower for example a 25hp Tohatsu would have a sticker that read something like 25 hp / 18 kph.
My other thought was this boat came new as a bare hull / Standard hull " no console or tiller steered".
