My first post, and I would like to thank all of you for the invaluable information that I have received from the collective knowledge that is present here. I've been using the site for a couple of years as I have been restoring and repowering (90 HP ETec) my
1966 Nauset. The old original bimini was corroded and mouse-eaten, it was mounted on the lower gunwale step and it stowed forward inside the stanchions. You could not stand up under it. I saw a resurrection of an earlier thread recently and it showed how you can mount the bimini on a rail on the upper gunwale and have it stow outside the stanchions and this is what I want to do. My question is: What would be the optimal width of the bimini that would allow it to fit outside of the forward stanchions without sticking out too far to the sides and also be wide enough to cover the width of the boat at the raised top position (about 4' aft of the stowed position). My boat narrows about 7 or 8 inches as you go forward from the console. Is this gong to be a problem?

It sounds like you want something similar to the Mills with sliders that mount on top of the gunwales. However, it does not mount to the rails.

Maybe some other company has one that uses rail mounts.
I used sliders on a couple of older 1977 and 1978 Montauks and it worked out great. Same basic hull as the Smirkless Nauset, etc.
Here is one I mounted using sliders. The top mounts outside of the boat unlike the previous version.
