Can someone please explain to me where the Tilt/Trim controls are on a 1989 Montauk or similar year, and how to operate them?
I understand the difference between tilt and trim, but not the operation on these particular boats. I am new to boating and whalers and will be hopefully purchasing one this weekend - I just want as much knowledge as possible before arriving at boat. Sorry for such a newbie question. Thanks.

A 1989 Mercury outboard should have an engine control that looks like this:

The power trim switch is located in the handle, operated by your thumb.

Power trim is an engine related item, not a boat item.

The trim control tilts the motor in a limited range while underway. This is used to adjust the way the boat rides and handles. When you get a boat and play with it, it will become apparent what it does. Tilt uses the same system, but raises the motor completely out of the water. You would do this when trailering.
