Well, yes, what would the boat have come with for a compass?

Have you reviewed Larry's photo album?

I recall his is a 1975.

According to the Boston Whaler price lists, there were two options.

1. Ritchie Explorer (Deck Mount)
2. Ritchie Navigator

The Whaler option compass that came from the factory on my 1975 Outrage 19 is a Ritchie Navigator, recessed mount. As you can see, the "winged" center console even has a raised round area for this compass mount. This compass has been re-designed by Ritchie, but the more recent design (now already at least 25 years old) fits the same size hole in the console.

I suppose the red Ritchie could be mounted atop this location, but I think the larger Navigator is a much better compass solution.

I agree, Larry, the Navigator is a far superior compass. If I was going to buy one, I'd go for it, but I just happen to have one of the little red Explorer's laying around, and I like the fact that it is so period to the boat. The magnetic compass has really become a backup device, and a decoration to most of us in modern boating. So I'm going to sit the little guy up on a 3/4" round piece of teak, and see what I think.
