The swing out cradles are present for our horizontal rod holders but all hardware associated with the bungee cords is missing.... We have a 1999 18', could someone explain or post a picture of the bungee cord configuration as it was provided at the factory? Do both ends remain affixed to the side of the boat or is one end supposed to have a hook that is removed as items are placed in the rack? Appreciate it.

It is fastened on one end and has a hook that goes around the rods and hooks into an eye. They break after a period of time.Google rod tamers a nd you will find them in different lengths.

They're black rubber about 1/4 inch in diameter. I found replacements at my local Bass Pro Shop.

Didn't realize they were supposed to be rubber. Had assumed that they would be shock cord. Any reason not to use shock cord? (readily available at local stores.)

Maybe a couple of reasons. Smaller diameter of the rubber is less obtrusive when moving around the boat. IMO the original looks better?? Unless the shock cord is of better than average quality it will fade and and lose elasticity fairly quickly and need replacement.
OTOH the rubber will turn a lighter, possibly gray, color over time and after several years will break. To avoid discoloring and early failure I treat mine with 303 Protectant.
The best preservative for our Boston Whalers is a full boat cover.
