I have a 1988 Montauk with a ETEC inline 90 with a Viper 13.25 X 15" mounted 1hole up. After reading many threads I'm considering raising it during the off season. Do all Montauks of that vintage have the engine mounting holes drilled in exactly the same spot? Is there another way to measure the correct engine height?
My (2102) engine has what looks like washer marks on the lower holes suggesting it was once mounted there (3 holes up). I've only owned this boat since January but the receipts included shows the motor was purchased for this boat.
When on the SeaLion trailer i cant put the motor all the way down because the skeg hits This would be one advantage of the extra height.

When the engine is mounted all the way down the engine mount should be touching the top of the transom. Each hole up will raise the engine 3/4". You should be able to measure the distance from the top of the transom to your engine mount to check it. 1 hole hole up should raise it 3/4". If thats what you measure then your holes were drilled correctly.

You can see the 3/4" distance between the hole positions represented in the diagram as the distance between the green, yellow, and red holes.

It sounds as though you have the newer, deeper, splashwell that was drilled using the Standard BIA mounting holes.

In the drawing above, would you verify that you have the top Black holes drilled in that location and the lower Red holes drilled in that location?
That is the Standard BIA mounting holes.

We are trying to determine when Whaler actually deepened the splashwell.

Your lower bolt holes should be slots instead of holes like the top. Is that correct?

Hey Joe. My boat is in NJ and i might not get down there for a while. The washer marks i talked about were on the lower holes of the top set. The bottom mounting holes on the motor are a "slot".
I'll need to review the drawing when near the boat. Inside the splash well all the bolts are visible and not close enough to the hottom that the washers needed to be modified.

I assume that the top holes are about 1 7/8 inches from the top.
The bottom holes are 8 inches below the top holes for a total of 9 7/8 inches from the top of the transom.

It sounds like you probably have the newer deeper splashwell but just wanted to verify.
