These seem to be a potential leakage problem. How are they made and what prevents them from leaking ?

You are not providing specific information to get any accurate information.

Generally speaking, pop up cleats are not desirable on any Boston Whaler hull given the foam making install very invasive.

What is wrong with a standard cleat?

Really,

Your response seems odd. If you are an administrator, presumable someone with more than a passing knowledge of things Whaler, I would have thought you would know that a Cross Tackle has six such cleats and a similarly flush forward running light. Perhaps the Cross Tackle is unique and my post can provide you with the opportunity to add to your knowledge of things Whaler.

thx

Cross Tackle,

You actually did not tell anyone here what boat you were referring too.
Yes, your username is Cross Tackle but that doesn't mean that is the boat you have or are talking about here.
Many members here have several boats and you may have been talking about a classic 13' for all anyone knows.

For everyone's info, he is referring to a 1997 Cross Tackle model as far as I can guess from his profile.

So, not Phil's fault for trying to guess what boat your were talking about.
Always helps to give us all the specifics of the boat in question.

I stated that without specific information, you would not get accurate advice.

My statement on popup cleats was conditioned by the words "Generally speaking".

With only 3 weeks of membership, 2 threads and 4 posts, I think bashing someone for responding is not a good start.

In my 12 years of being on the two primary Boston Whaler forums I know of only 7 Cross Tackle owners. While a fantastic boat, It is very unique model and not widely discussed.

I am a volunteer administrator and not an employee of Boston Whaler. I offer the site and its members assistance in part to repay all the help I have received from WC.

I am now curious if other post classic models included pop-up cleats.

Point taken,

While I have been on this forum for a short time my ownership of Whalers goes back to the early eighties. Your response was in my opinion snarky, hence the "bashing" as you describe it. The Cross Tackle is a very unique variation as far as I know of the Whaler which fits my fly fishing interest. I respect your efforts on the forum. Let's just move on. I expect to have something to contribute to the forum as I learn more about the Cross Tackle.

l would take a cleat off and inspect how it was done by the factory. did they leave any drain holes? Was the cavity glassed in? most pop up cleats that I have seen will allow water to drain through the mechanism. to me it would be important to make sure that the area underneath the cleats and the bow light was sealed and drained properly overboard.

Thanks for the info. All of the cleats and the forward pop up running light have visible drains with the exception of the two mid ship cleats. So I will probably start with those and see what I find.
