I have 1988 Montauk 17. I bought an aftermarket bow rail for it from Specialty Marine. The directions, it say to drill two 9/64" holes for the stanchion support which is behind the bow light and forward of the Norman pin. When I did that I hit metal and when I was finally able to drill through it I could not get the supplied screws to screw down. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Am I doing something wrong?

There is a 1 1/4" x 3" x 3/8 aluminum block in there. you can see it if you click on "main" above, then wood locating diagrams then the link to the diagram for your boat. If you didn't drill the holes too large you could tap some threads and use machine screws. I really don't know what screws the factory used but that's what I would do. If you've drilled the holes too large, well, I would drill through the metal, fill with epoxy and use the same screws you use elsewhere on the rail.
