I presently have a 12 gallon gas tank under the rear seat on my 1993 13' Sport. I am planning on removing it and just going with a 6 gallon portable tank sitting on the port side behind the rear seat. Does this type of tank need to be secured to the floor with a strap or will it basically just sit there without being tied down? If it does need to be tied down is there any wood under the deck that the strap tie down can be attached to? I hate drilling holes in the deck if it's not really necessary.
Any suggestions on what brand of tank to use? I see Moeller and Attwood around in the local stores. Is one better than the other and are there any better ones available?

I have 2 - 6gal and 1 - 3 gal.
All three are strapped down. I have the small strap or bungie cord attachments mounted in floor and each side. There is wood in that area, you'll have to look at the diagram for your boat.
I've heard of 6 gal tanks busting loose and going through the console like a bowling ball. JMHO

I normally use six gallon OMC tanks. If you want to go with a six gallon tank, I really like the "Dura Tank" with trays/straps. Very secure.

I add a Moeller 10.75 gallon (they call it a 12 but mine doesn't hold that) tank under the front seats if I'm taking a long trip. I just put a non-skid shelf liner under the tank and wedge 3 or 4 pieces of pool noodle between the top of the tank and the bottom of the seat. It doesn't go anywhere.

As Phil states, my two metal 6 gallon Yamaha tanks survive fine in the chop that I experience in San Diego Bay or Mission Bay......if I can tolerate the pounding so can one full and one partial tank.

Since I have a 13 ft Super Sport Limited, my tanks are under a heavy fiberglass lid and then as noted I have a non skid floor mat under each tank, pool noodles etc, to minimize tank movement and scuffing of the boat's non-skid.
