Hi to all. My question goes out to those familiar with the wooden stern seats used on classic 16' whaler models such as the Eastport.

After building a pilot seat last year out of Ghanaian mahogany and replacing the rotten plywood base of my pilot console with a base constructed out of dense solid bubinga from Cameroun, I am about to undertake adding a stern seat to a 1971 16' custom whaler and I am following the drawings which i downloaded here. My first question is: What is the structural functionality of the two "risers" for the seat? Drawing no. 62012005 of the riser indicates a .375" wide slot centered in the middle of the 12.5"x1" cutout along the bottom edge of the 47"x3.75" riser. What is this slot for? From examining photos of the seat it is clear that the cutout lies over the three bench slats of the seat. My final question regards fastening the risers. There is no indication how to do this in the drawing. Do the bench slats get screwed to the riser and then is the riser fastened to the side of the boat above the bottom ledge?

I would like to have it clear in my head before I begin. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Not structural. These riser hold the seat down like the 13' and 16' model risers.

2. What is this slot for?
I am not positive but I can take a guess that it is the same thing that 13' models had with the removable front bench seat. There was a rubber insert placed in that groove to stop the slat seat from rattling or moving forward.

3. My final question regards fastening the risers.
You are correct. They are keeping this a secret it seems.
I would guess that there are at least 3 screws that hold this into place. One on each end about 3" from the ends and 1 in the middle. Maybe someone here with an original stern seat can show us a photo and give us the dimensions.
The slats do not get screwed to the riser. Same principle as with the other models with Risers.

Not sure this seat is original as it does not have slats.
