Hello all,
So, I've been trying to locate some replacement wire rope for my steering system. I seen various posts from people who have used coated cable they found at Home Depot, but I see all they sell is vinyl coated as opposed to the nylon coated Boston Whaler recommends. In fact, the manuals say specifically NOT to use vinyl coated cable.
Any idea the best place to score some nylon coated stainless cable?
I found this on Amazon:

Think that'll work well? (I like the red, BTW)

Stainless was what was originally used, but I'm sure galvanized would be fine as well. I suppose I'm more concerned with the nylon versus vinyl coating.
Maybe Rich will chime in when he gets a chance.
Thanks for the link to the pics, by the way. That top image is much more clear than my blurry cell phone shot I made. :)

I never knew Boston Whaler had a preference in the coating on the cable. I wonder why the coating matters? The steel provides the strength. I have the Lowe's/ Home Depot cable on my 1979 11'.

Not too sure why the coating is supposed to matter. According to the Reference Manual, BW says, "Do not use cable with a vinyl cover as it will not stand up in use."
???
Here's the manual where I read this:

Humbucker,
That information can be found right in the 9-17 or 9-21 Owners Manual we have available here for download.

No need to send the readers here to another site when we already have that info available.

Have replaced my 3/8" cable with vinyl coated about 15 years ago and getting ready to do it again. Will be using the same stuff as before on my
1967 Sport 13'. Didn't have any problems and it looks the same as it did when the boat was new.

Sorry, Joe. I didn't know that info was here as well.

McMaster-Carr has nylon coated wire rope. Sold by the foot.

Hi, new owner of 1972 13 sport (side console) and trying to keep the boat close to original. I've scanned all over and having trouble finding specs for wire rope replacement and hoping to get some guidance.
What diameter wire rope should I use?
Is it best to use coated or uncoated?
What length should I buy that gives me room to make a mistake or two when installing.
I searched all over for the above information and could not find it.
Thanks in advanced for your help!
Cheers,
Brendan
