I have a 2004 Montauk 170 and would like some recommendations on the best larger capacity gas tanks (20-26 gallon) and also water separation filters.

Hello Rockyrhodes, if your fuel tank is above deck and under a RPS helm seat Moeller Marine may have some options for you.

Moeller makes a fuel tank for the Montauk with a revised fill neck to clear the RPS seat and with an off-white color to better match the hull color (as opposed to the traditional red). These fuel tanks will be Plastic or Polyethalene or Polypropalene if I recall (I get the materials and spelling confused).

For the Fuel/Water separator choose a spin-on cartridge type (like an oil filter) that has the clear viewing bowl option. Moeller Marine makes them Racor and the likes. They typically include the head mount unit when bought as a kit and they are offered in different cartridge sizes. Select one that will fit into or onto your available space, keep accessibilty in mind when installing.

Happy boating...
