Thread subject: Whaler Central - Boston Whaler Boat Information and Photos :: Broken cover snaps

I own a 1983 GTX-18 (I/O) and amazingly enough the original canvas is still in good shape except several of the snaps on the bow cover (the female side) have broken. They basically split in half. Do they make snap kits such that I can reattach that part of the snap to the canvas and use the existing male half that is still in place or do I need to replace both?

Thanks

John

Yes.

They sell male and female snaps. Any full service marine chandlery will carry them.

e.g. http://www.westmarine.com/boat-cover-...k--4236089

I would replace both male and female snaps to ensure a good and snug fit.

Thanks Phil. I was wondering where I could get Taylor Made parts. That boat has a lot of accessories with the taylor made emblem on them.

On a somewhat similar topic, where do you typically buy your stainless steel hardware? Our local hardware stores have all been run off by Lowes / home Depot and their stainless is not the best. Is there an online resource that offers good quality stainless hardware?

Thanks!

Regarding those snaps, I carry an old Chapstick and use it to lubricate the female side of the snap when they start getting hard to get apart.

I was local to Hamilton Marine, a independent chandlery to the commercial and recreational boaters of Maine. While their website is dated technology, they have a huge inventory, good customer service and decent prices.

www.hamiltonmarine.com

www.jamestowndistributors.com is also very good.

For this item, I would go with wholesalemarine.com

Thanks Phil and Wing. I went ahead and ordered a basic snap repair kit from wholesale marine as I have several snaps to replace on the 22' Revenge and the 18 GTX. I'll check out Hamilton for the stainless, I have given Jamestown enough business this spring. Appreciate the links.

Phil, the windshild frame on the GTX is probably some sort of aluminum I do not think it is marinium but it could be. I do recall it has taylor made stickers on the glass. The glass is in good shape but the frame has multiple small whitish pock marks on it.. You'd think it was a result of salt water damage but that boat has lived in fresh water all of its life. The metal has become pitted and I know I can'd fix that damage but can you reccomend a metal polish that would clean that damage up somewhat?
