Repowering with a Yamaha F70 and going with the new command link gauges. I wanted to get a new Moeller white gas tank and add a sending unit so I can connect the fuel gauge. It looks like Moeller makes a 031626BR which is EPA compliant and has a built in sending unit. It looks like these tanks are Red and not white. Also the 031626BR is $200 more.

Does anyone have this BR tank and can you get it in white?

Can you add a sending unit to the 031626 white tank?

Thanks, Brad

I have the white tank on my 1986 Montauk with F70. There seem to be a few versions of the tank, one with a Kelch float gauge cap, another with a non-gauge cap, some with two round metal plates bolted to the top, one of the plates is standard sender size the other large, maybe for access/clean-out.

I think there are two model numbers for the different caps, but not sure about the access plates.

I found one at my local West Marine with gauge cap and sender/access plate at a good price and grabbed it. I thought I might buy NMEA 2k sender after getting my LMF 200 hooked to my engine. Instead I just got an EP-85R and have the virtual fuel gauge using engine data.

You could always cut your own sender hole but would need to clean the tank of shavings.

One thing about this tank is depending on the position of your hawse hole for fuel line the tank may cover it. I ended up cutting 3" wide strips of 3/4" thick starboard to set the tanks on and to mount the aluminium tie down clips to (sold separately). This allowed me to run the fuel line under tank to the hawse hole. I tried moving the tank forward enough to expose enough of the whole to route the line but it pushed the tank far enough forward that I felt it would be annoying under my feet. You could also drill a new hole into the rigging tunnel. I like the starboard solution because no new holes and it allows water to freely run between the strips under the tank.

Real happy with the F70, and with that tank it feels like I am never filling it up as it uses such little fuel. Took the family out all day today and used 2 gallons of gas. Very different than my old thirsty two stroke with two 12 gallon tanks.

Jharrell,

Thanks for the reply. Like you said, after a call to Moeller, there seems to be two different versions and colors now. I like the white tank and just have to look at options as far as a fuel gauge. What is the EP 85 R? I have a HDS 5 Gen 2 so I can get the nema 2000 cable and use that. I also have the old red 24 gallon tank and may try to add a sending unit to it and see how it goes.

Glad to hear you like the F70. Ordered the 13 1/4 x 14 performance prop. So now need to figure out if 2 holes up or all the way up?

Thanks
Brad

The Lowrance EP-85R is a memory unit that accumulates fuels usage as the engine is running, its just a plastic device that is plugged into the N2K bus. It allows Lowrance gauges and MFD's like your HDS to display a "virtual" fuel gauge. You setup the fuel tank size and it subtracts fuel used from it, also records seasonal and trip fuel used. Unlike a tank sender you must manually reset it when you fill up the tank, but my understanding is it give a more accurate reading of actual fuel used since its based on engine data.

My F70 is mounted on a jackplate and mounted all the way up on the jackplate. I have a Solas "New Saturn" 15" prop. My dealer choose it and I was skeptical, but it runs great fetching 38 mph and hold very well. I can actually run just fine on a plane with the jackplate all the way up and the motor all the way up, which let me run very shallow. I also got the optional water pressure sender for the engine so it puts out water pressure over N2K as well. So I say go all the way up with the right prop.

Here is a pic which was taken before I raised the motor all the way up on the jackplate: https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo...directlink

The EP-85R is the way to go. It sounds like this will replace the fuel gauge on the tank. So just go with the plain white moeller tank.

Was the 120-37 interface cable long enough or did you need the 2' extension ?

I do like having the fuel gauge in the cap as a double check since the tank is not see through and being strapped down it's otherwise hard to tell how much fuel is in there by lifting it. But so far the EP-85R data has been right on, just have to remember to reset it when filling the tank. I also like looking at fuel used during the trip, resetting that as I go out. Plus even without the EP-85R you will see GPH and MPG on your HDS.

The interface cable was just long enough to make it through the rigging tunnel up into the console to the power T mounted there. Not a big deal to use the extension cable but nice I didn't need it.

Thanks for all your help. I will post some pictures in the next few weeks. The dealer is getting parts in but still waiting on the motor!

Thanks again!

Mount motor all the way up,I also have Yamaha performance series 13.25 x14 prop on a F70LA on my 1999 Alert 17. My dealer also thought it was too high and said I would probably be back to have it lowered due to ventilation on turns. After he said that,I thought that it did look too high, but after running it I changed my mind. This setup is perfect for this hull and motor. Mount 3 holes up and never look back.THANKS TOM! Also I have a red Moeller 26 gal. Gas tank it fits well and I can see the fuel level through the tank with no need for fuel guage.I like to keep it simple.

Will do on all the way up! Thanks Alan!

Again mine is on a powered jackplate and mounted all the way up on the plate. It will start ventilating in turns once the jackplate is more than half way up, but not terribly so, which is useful in running very shallow waters that I do sometimes (less than 2 feet).

In rougher open water it will ventilate going over larger chop in the same way, in that case I put the plate all the way down and it resolves the ventilation unless it's large wave jumping chop ;).

So mounting on the transom all the way up should be no issue, since I don't see any ventilation for another 2-3 inches above that. As Tom Clark has said before these modern stainless props hold much better than the old ones, plus I think the F70 has a larger AV plate than my old motor. My new setup ventilate so much less than my old Merc 2-stroke with old stainless prop.

I will try and get a pic of my white Moeller tank install to give you ideas.

jharrell,
I ordered the interface cable, starter kit , and storage device. Just thinking ahead....how does this set up connect to the HDS. If I remember correctly there was another loose cable that had 4 wires that may go the the NEMA 2000 or do I have to take off the bracket and run a new cable? The tough part working on these little Whalers is all the bending and twisting trying to work in the console. I am usually sore for days but it sure does bring a smile to your face when you are finished!

The HDS 5 Gen2 should have the round N2K connection on the back, I found a support article on Lowrances site that shows the rear connectors: http://support.lowrance.com/system/se...LE_ID=2139

You will need a short N2K cable and N2K T, every device needs this to tap in. All the Lowrance device I have bought ( 2 LMF 200's, EP-85r) came with a cable and T. Good thing because they seem overpriced by themselves.

Looking at the starter kit, it comes with an extra T and a short and long cable most likely for chartplotter.

I see now! The 10 pin connector had a separate data wire, that is what I was thinking about. Hopefully I can use the 2' extension to run up the HDS.

Thanks

I thought that with the Yamaha Command Link gauge, like my E-TEC I-Command gauge, you could program in your tank's capacity and the electronic module on the engine, which precisely controls fuel sent to the injectors, would deduct the fuel used and give you a fuel remaining readout, whether by an LCD gauge or numbers I don't know, but I thought that was done because senders in the tank are so inaccurate but this would be exact. At least that's the way I command works and I thought Command Link also.

Evinrude I-Command gauges are made by Lowrance. They are physically identical to the LMF gauges and have slightly different firmware to support specific engine error codes. Suzuki SMIS guages are also made by Lowrance and are also physically identical.

For the Lowrance/Evinrude/Suzuki guage to display fuel remaining it needs a separate memory module, the gauge has no memory for this. Either an EP-85R or in the case of Suzuki their engine interface cable had the EP-85R built in, not sure if Evinrudes is the same.

Interestingly Evinrude also has ICON guages which are made by Faria and look analog but are N2K, I believe they have fuel memory to display fuel remaining built in.

Not sure about Command link, which is actually N2k protocol with different connectors and hubs instead of T's, the Lowrance N2K cable for Yamaha actually just plugs into the command link connector on the engine. I believe the fuel gauge needs a tank sender and does not accumulate fuel used otherwise.
