Hello All,

I was glad to take advantage of the beautiful spring weather this weekend and clean up my 1983 Montauk 17'. I'm thinking of replacing my two 12 gallon Tempo tanks with the 22 gallon Moeller. I like the idea of dealing with only one tank, and the filler cap looks much more accessible if the tank were to be in the stowed position. The only thing that worries me is the possible relocation of the fuel hose from the center line cut-out where the tank would sit. Have any of you worked with this tank or similar ones and if so, did you have to move the fuel line? Thanks so much guys.

I have an 1988 Montauk with the 27 gallon moeller and I used a rubber mat under the tank which creates enough space to run the line under the tank and through the original hole. As long as the mat is thick enough to allow clearance for the line you won't have a problem. I used a rubber non slip/non marring mat that I found at home depot. has worked perfect for a few years now. good luck

(moderator note: please follow guideline #1 on the front page and use the full 4 digit year)

Thanks jaxmyth,

Did you use thin strips of the rubber matting or did you use a solid piece to cover the whole bottom of the tank? I've read some other gas tank related posts where people tried to allow for the natural flow of water aft. Would the rubber matting impede that?

You should check out this previous discussion:

I recently was able to check out one of those white Moeller 22 gallon tanks up close, and I thought they were pretty low quality plastic work. If you want a big single tank, I would go with the 24 gallon red one.

DriDeck plastic squares make an excellent pad under fuel tanks, remote oil tanks, or a Whaler battery box.

i used one solid piece under the tank, although there are grooves that allow water to drain.

I have the 26 gallon Moeller tank. I kept the rubber mats for balance and trimmed the center part ...

I mounted the 22 gallon Moeller this week with 2 DryDek squares underneath. I used the original bungee cords in the aft and tarp strap hooked into the rear bungee hooks up front. I didn't have to relocate the fuel line. I may eventually permanently mount it, but so far this works great and took just a few minutes.

There was a discussion on these Moeller tanks a while back. It was finally agreed that because the measurements of the 24 Gal and the 22 Gal are virtually the same, Moeller must have de rated the capacity so that over filling wouldn't cause a fuel spill.

I replaced my two twelve gallon tanks this week with the white 22 gallon Moeller. The two tanks worked fine but I also liked the idea of one large tank. My real motivation was one of my tanks was stolen out of my boat at the local marina one night, so I figured they would not be able to carry one large tank away and not have anyone notice.

The installation was fairly simple. I left the two mats in place and just trimmed them to allow the one tank to sit across on them. Then I had to drill a new hole in the floor and install a 1 inch thru hull fitting with silicone sealant for the fuel line. I will say drilling a new hole in the floor makes me nervous and I hope I sealed it properly as to prevent any water from getting into the floor. I wish moeller would have designed the tank so you could use the original hole in the floor.
