If I use this transadapter, http://www.kentfabrications.com/Marine.html to raise my 1972 13's transom from 15 to 20 inches, do I use the same bolt pattern as for the 16/17 Whaler? Or is there a different pattern suggested for smaller boats/motors? Has anyone else tried this device? The engine on my 13 is a Honda 50 and is mounted to a device which raises it sufficiently but it sits aft about 5 inches and the splash well keeps filling with water whenever I stop. I think if I could move the motor forward to the transom it would improve the ride and trim at rest.

I had one on my 13--see my personal page. It is relatively heavy, and given your motor is on the heavier side for a 13 I don't think you'll see any improvement on trim at rest, but it will reduce water splashing over the transom, if that concerns you. You don't say what your ride issues are, but if porpoising it will help some to move the motor closer to the transom, also to raise the motor higher. It should use the standard bolt pattern.

Thank you for your response, John. My issue is the extra weight of the outboard sitting several inches aft of the transom and the water coming in when stopping. This boat is really fast and I'll probably replace the 50 with a 25 or 30 HP mostly for the weight savings and trim. I guess I'll consider other options because I didn't realize the transadaptor is so heavy.

I wouldn't say the Transdaptor is super heavy, only that it's basically a wash in terms of where the engine is without it, to moving the engine closer to the transom with it. The real issue is the weight of the 50, as your 13 wasn't designed to have a engine weighing more than about a two-stroke 40 circa 1972.

I just received a response from Kentfabrications and they say the transom adapter weighs 7 lbs so add a pound for nuts and bolts and I don't think it would weigh much more than glassing in a piece of plywood. So I'm going to order it and give it a try.

Whaler's advice has always been to keep the engine weight on the older 13s as far under 200# as you can. Adding 7# is not going to make or break you. Moving the engine closer to the transom will change how the boat sits and should help some with the water splashing over the transom when you come to a stop.

Just bought an adapter kit From Kent Fab. For my new to me 13' whaler. Awesome setup. Great customer service. Now trying to figure out which motor to buy. Boat will be used by my 15 year old kids so I need to be careful how much power I give them. I was thinking a 40 hp. Any thoughts?
