Am I correct in noticing that these louvered doors were made in two sizes, with the height being the variable? It appears that the doors installed on the Montauks had one additional louver vane, for a total of 5, and therefor, being taller than the doors installed on the Outrage models, standard console. It makes some sense, as the Outrage models have the twin switch panels installed the console aft face that the Montauk does not have.

I recently looked a console aft louvered door, removed from my Outrage 25, and noticed it only has 4 louver vanes, not the 5 that my Montauk has.

People buying/selling these should be sure that the size is the correct application for their boat.

Larry -- That's an interesting observation. I had never noticed a difference even though I have owned both Montauks and an Outrage. You may be right.

Wouldn't it be great if we could see both the console doors from a Montauk *and* an Outrage side by side? If I owned both a Montauk and an Outrage I would do that but I do not own both a Montauk and an Outrage.

If only we knew a Whaler enthusiast who owned both a Montauk and an Outrage and who wanted to be helpful. That would be great to have their help with this question that you raised.

I have noticed the difference in the past between 4 and 5 vanes.

However, I never thought about the actual overall size of the door.
I am not sure there is one?

My nephew owns a Montauk. I will check on the difference between the door I just bought from Larry and the one on my nephew's Montauk and check the one on his dad's Outrage 25.

There are variations in the number of louvres on the side and rear doors on Montauks depending upon the year:
a 1979 Montauk has 8 vanes on the side door; 5 vanes on the back door.
A 1986 Montauk has 8 vanes on the side door; 4 vanes on the back door.
A 1991 Montauk has 11 vanes on the side door; 6 vanes on the back door.
I do not have exact dimensions of the louvre doors.

I can confirm that a 1989 Montauk has 8 louvers on the side door; 4 louvers on the back door.

Furthermore, the dimensions of the insides of the frames are:

9" x 13" for the side door

23" x 8-1/2" for the back door

Tom - This Whaler enthusiast could have answered the question on my own, and not brought it to public attention. However, the Outrage 25 is currently in Ft Lauderdale area, the Montauk is up in the Wisconsin "thumb" (surrounded by the frozen water of both Green Bay and Lake Michigan), about 1700 miles apart. The Outrage 18 is in a garage nearby in Chicago, where I am currently, but with 3' of snow plowed up against the garage door, I can't get in there!

But your information that a 1989 Montauk has the 4 vane door indicates to me that perhaps when the 1983-1990 console design occurred, even though the Montauk does not have the lower switch panels, they simply switched to the 4 vane door for all models.

It also seems that the 5 vane door could have been used on all of the 1977-1982 black vinyl faced consoles, both Montauks and Outrages, since no lower switch panels were used on those consoles. Here is a photo of the 5 vane door on this particular console:

This door is definitely higher than the door used on the Outrage models.

I am unable to find any photos showing the aft console doors in my later Outrage boats. But Joe's link to the console design evolution clearly shows the height-to-width differences between the 4 and 5 vane versions.

That would be my assumption too.

I believe they used the same door for both the Montauk and the Outrage as the console was also the same during certain years.

Not sure exactly which years they switched doors but we do know when they switched consoles.
Did they switch doors when they changed the console?
1977-1982 = 5 vane?
1983-1985 = 4 vane?
1986- 1990 = 4 vane?
etc.
