I just purchased a 1975 Montauk that needs work on the interior. It is missing both console doors and the bow locker cover. The wood on the reversible pilot seat is in bad shape, but probably salvageable. I also need the rod holders that go in the seat and a new windshield.

Does anybody have used versions of these items they would sell in the spirit of helping a newcomer get started? If you happen to have an entire interior, I would consider that.

We split our time between Louisville and North Captiva, FL. When made presentable, the boat will go permanently to Florida, where I hope it helps us catch the big fish in Pine Island Sound and the passes that, so far, are eluding us!

You have what people here call a "winged" console, Used door sets may be difficult to find from that era, but I think I saw that Black Duck Gallery, a sponsor here, has the patterns from a previous job, and can make them. The frames are rabbited solid teak, and the doors are teak marine plywood, with hasp latches and a clip.

May I ask you a couple of quick re. this console:

- Were they an option for Montauks?
- What is that plug-like fitting at the bottom of the console in the second photo?
- What's behind the side door - your fire extinguisher?
- Where is a good place to buy a windshield (mine's missing)?

One last question,(I promise). What do you think of the Merc. My boat has an 1980 80 hp. The carbs badly need a good cleaning and a kit. Do these old Mercs have a reputation for reliability, and are parts still available/

Thank you, John. Regarding your questions:

1. This console was standard on the Montauks up through 1974-1976. It's first application was for the 1973 Outrage models. In Montauk form, you will not have the fuel gauge and on-off switch between the instrument panels. I re-made the original teak plywood panels out of 3/8" solid teak, with beveled edges. You have probably also noticed that I raised my console 6" on teak blocking I designed and built. Some like this feature, and some do not. But I needed to do it since I am tall. I did it on the Montauk also.

if so, those are courtesy lights I installed. They were not offered by Whaler at the time.

3. The side door is for easy acess into the console. My console came with the factory installed trumpet horn on the starboard side of the console, so no fire extinguisher pocket was installed.

I have the F.E. installed on the console floor, using it's own plastic bracket. I can reach in the side door to grab it if necessary.

4. I can't help with a windshieled purchase, but I know there is information on the site for sourcing one. Or another reader can help out.

5. Regarding the 1980 Merc 80, they are four of the six cylinders of the classic "tower of power" 140 HP L6 of the same year. I have never owned one, but a friend has a 1973 version on a hull like yours and says it runs well, with plenty of power. Consider it the same as the prop rated 75's of 1984-1986. Try to find a dealership that has experience working on these older Mercs.

Good luck with your project. Montauks are great boats, and ones with the earlier hull that you have are not often seen.

What a horn, Finnegan (Larry?)! The entire boat is like a... work of art. If you ever spend any time in Pine Island Sound, I have to see it in person. I love your tow vehicle as well! Thank you for answering that long sequence of questions.
