I need some technical advise. Should the stern petcock on the starboard side be open or closed on my 1983 Outrage any time while in the water. My problem was while it was on was on the trailerI had the petcock closed and it filled up with water during a rain storm. The result was it backed up water in the hull. Once I opened the petcock, the water drained out while the boat was sitting on the the trailer. The problem becomes, when on the water, if I have it closed, I can not drain the boat while moving etc. So, should the petcock be opened or closed when the boat is in the water?
Thanks,

Typically they are left open. The only exception might be if you have a jackplate which pushes the drains underwater and the stern of the boat down, but even then it should not be an issue. On mine, i leave the sump closed, the splashwell open and the anchor locker open. I do have bilge pumps that i use if i get a lot of water in the boat, to quickly clear the water overboard, then they get shutoff again.

In the water, I leave both my Drain Plugs in.
1. Bow Locker
2. Starboard Stern Sump
I only remove the stern drain plug when on the trailer.

Thank you for your quick responses. I now have my answer to my main question. While on the water I will leave the petcock installed.
