Hi. On my 1974 montauk I have two side mount rod holders. They where located one on each side, why? It would seem to me that they should be on the same side. Were the reels just put in the holders and rod laid on the standoffs? Need original location?

Are you talking about rail mounted rod holders or something else? I can't picture a rod holder in which a reel without a rod could be held. Got any photos?

I think he means under gunwale rod holders. I know on mine, the three rod holder teaks from Whaler, the lower rung is near useless because the reel has nowhere to sit.

I would just look at current Montauk 17 and see what Whaler does.

thanks for the reply. look at my personal page and you will see the rod holders, one on gunwales port and starboard. YOU MADE ME THINK--- SO I WENT OUT TO THE VAN WHERE I STORE STUFF AND LOW AND BEHOLD I HAVE 4, TWO WITH HOLES AND 2 WITH A CUP CUTOUT . ROD IN HOLE, REEL IN CUP, THAT HOW IT WORKS.

Okay, you're talking about the rail mounted rod holders. If those are the chrome plated brass Lees rod holders they are no longer made and highly sought by Whaler owners. They are usually adjusted at an angle to the outside of the boat and facing aft so the rod can be stowed there when fishing.

There is no set location. They can be moved and adjusted to where ever your fishing methods require. Some guys might troll or flat line so the holders could mount high and the rod/reel sticking off each side of the boat. Others might use down riggers or out riggers and require a different tilt and position. Bass fisherman might just have them in the straight up position like your pictures and use them as a place to stow the rod while running or not in use.

They are very nice holders but I prefer some of the newer styles that are much easier to adjust.

I had similar rod holders on my Montauk. They were mounted on the outside of the rails so they weren't in the way and were positioned to point the rod out towards the sides. I could troll with 4 rods, two out the rear and one out each side.

I would just reposition them to your needs. The forward rod holders are useless if you plan on using these for trolling multiple lines. Once you unscrew them from the rails, you will see a large screw that needs to be loosened to adjust the position of the rod holder.

Nice boat. I always wanted one of those forward casting platforms for my old Montauk.
