Hi I have bought a 1975 13 foot sport an the plastic steering wheel is broke. It has the pulley steering system and one day I will upgrade to teleflex no feedback but not now. Id like to know if:

1. A store like west marine carries a suitable replacement that goes on to the original helm / bezel
2. If not where can I get a steering wheel that will fit the original setup thats on the boat?>\

Please point me to a site or s tore that has a simple replacement that doesnt cause me to have to buy anything other then a steering wheel.

I dont care what kind of steering wheel it is as long as it fits whats currently on the boat which is all still original

Below, check out some pics of my 13 footer, I took after I just the custom restoration. I was in a hurry to get the boat in the water, and I picked up this steering wheel at a marine parts store. This wheel is available at any marine store and its cheap. I removed it after a couple of weeks when I found a destroyer wheel. You can buy one like this, or if you get down to the Tampa area, let me know and I'll give you this one. It fits your helm. BTW you'll have to sort through a few pics to find this cheap plastic steering wheel. Folks that saw my boat at the time commented on the nice mahogany custom job and how bad the cheap wheel looked. LOL

Why not just go with the Stainless Destroyer type?

I just bought the boat and its in the shop getting freshened up with a new water pump and, I was trying to order a wheel before 4th of july weekend. Well I had a newport whaler an the steering wheel mated to the helm with the little lock key an groove that you typically see. Well, im unsure how the 1975 13 foot sport wheel mates to the helm. If I knew it was like my newport I would get the stainless destroyer but want to be sure. When I dropped the boat off I quickly tried to take steering wheel off but shop was closing and the nut is rusted on. Currently soaking in sea foam and wd40..... Does it mate to the shaft an helm just like a montauk and newport?

Kyle,
Not sure what you will find on your 1975, my 1972 had a a helm that had a tapered "square" shaft instead of the tapered round shaft with the keyway slot. This was not a cable and pulley system. I could not get any type of wheel that matched the helm. I replaced the steering cable and helm with a new Rotech Uflex Rotary helm system and bought a SS destroyer type wheel off Ebay. LOVE THE NEW SYSTEM AND WHEEL!!!

I plan on going to the teleflexsystem to an doing away with the pulley stuff too. Its just that I sure want to get on the water this thursday and no time to upgrade the entire steering system because boat is in shop now for new throttle cables and a new water pump. Ill be lucky to get it back wednesday. Maybe ill put some vice grips on the shaft hahahahahaha (joke)

Anyone got any tips on how to hold the housing while I take the nut off? For example, I cant hold the wheel hand portion because all that dry rotted an broke off. All thats left is the centercap metal housing. uggggg
