Thread subject: Whaler Central - Boston Whaler Boat Information and Photos :: caulk between teak pieces on gunnels

I have a 1988 Outrage 18 that I am refinishing the teak on the gunnels and would like to know what the dark caulk is between the boards. Is it available and what is it called? I did try a site search but wasn't successful. Can this stuff be carefully pulled out and reinstalled? Thanks

it's black polysulfide caulk. You may or may not need to remove it when you sand the teak. I did not on mine and it worked out just fine. If you do have to remove it, then you will want to recaulk the seams.

Thanks Kamie, It has survived well during the stripping and sanding. I am concerned about the varnishing over it. Should I try to tape over it to cover it ? If it is readily avail. I may remove it.

I didn't tape it off when I varnished mine. Just varnish over it and take a paper towel and wipe off the caulk

If you need to recaulk look at BoatLife Caulk.

Yes, you want to use a polysulfide caulk.
BoatLIFE is a brand, not a product.
BoatLIFE's Life-Calk is their polysulfide caulk.
There are many manufacturers that offer polysulfide caulks.

Yes, I bought Boat life calk at West Marine(black polysulfide) at their inflated price.
