Hello, I have a 1968 13 footer, what's a good ladder to use? Without having to spend a lot of money.

I used Turpin's pictures in his profile as inspiration and built a three step out of PVC pipe. I think its 1.25" pipe with 1" pipe slid inside it.

Rather than the aluminum foot standoffs I just zip tied a pool noodle to the back of the first step. It also keeps the thing from sinking. :-)

I do not want to sound mean, but if you can not get in a 13 whaler without a ladder, you should not be out in the boat...

So most people under 8, most people over 68, and 20ish% of women (not wearing fins anyway) shouldn't use a 13' Whaler?

Not everyone can get in a boat from the water without some kind of ladder, steps, etc.

So those of us that might have have handicaps or conditions that prevent us from being able to easily board our boats shouldn't own and need to get rid of them? I have a hard enough time dealing with something I was born with and didn't ask for and I'll be the last one to sell my boat because someone thinks I shouldn't use it because of my disability. We come here for advice on how to make our whalers better, not to be insulted.

Small Whalers are awkward loading in and out of when anchored in a few feet of water as I discovered recently. My wife's only complaint after a recent adventure.

I bought a telescoping boarding ladder, a three step. I had to bend the brackets that bolt to the transom just a bit, they were really made for a boat with a flat transom. I think it may have been a Garelick brand. If you look on my personal page, down near the bottom you'll see one mounted on my current Whaler. When not in use, we bungee it to the stern eye.

When I was a bit younger it was no problem climbing over the side of my 13 footer. I probably could still do it if there was a shark nipping at my feet. But I'm not that young anymore, so I built this ladder 3 years ago.

I use a Garelick Inflatable Boat Ladder from West Marine on my Sport 15. I just attach it to the transom and climb aboard. I keep it within easy reach in case I fall overboard.

A bit pricey, but well made and works well, and takes up very little storage space.
