Getting the 1984 Montauk ready for the season and i finally decided to address the play in the steering wheel this year. The issue turned out to be the plastic bearing/spacer/guide (not sure what its called) ring that fits around the steering shaft but clips into the black collar. It was completely worn through.

Any idea where to find a replacement, name of the unit??

On the inside of the helm (inside the console) there should be a Manufacturer's marking. If the helm is old, probably original, it's Teleflex.

Replacement parts may be hard to find. It might be easier to replace the helm.

Thanks for the advice. Could the plastic grommet in question be part of the black spacer that the steering wheel butts up against.

Without a photo, it's hard to understand what you are talking about.
