I be come owner of outrage 17 from 1991 year and if you can help me to advice what is the best motor engine for this boat? i will using for spearfishing and skiing so it will be more weight on board!

what do you think for Honda vtec 90 HP?

I owned a 1991 Outrage 17 for 7 years.

A 90 hp will give you a top speed of about 40 mph and a 115hp about 44-46 mph.

This model is sensitive to heavy engines. A new Honda 90hp weights 386 lbs and 400 lbs with fluids and a prop.

A second engine that is worth a serious look is a E-TEC 90 at ~ 325lbs dry.

In my opinion both engines are great. Lighter is better.

Hello.

I sold my 17 outrage this past summer. I ran it with a 115 2 stroke Yamaha. This was a perfect engine for the boat. Other than the steep gas mileage, I would continue with the exact same machine.

thanks all for help. I am waiting my friends to tray 115 Mercury and then I will decide.

Also I am looking Yamaha 100 is more silent then 115 Y and have trolling system. Also I don't need max speed, for me is more important to spend lees gas on cruising sped 20-25 mph.

Interesting performance data. Took my 1993 17' Outrage, 2002 Mercury 115 with 560 hrs out for 2nd time since I bought it last year. This trip just wife, me and about 3/4 tank fuel + 5 gallons spare jug. The on board speedometer & hand held gps recorded 38.8 mph top speed. Varied trim to obtain max speed. I keep reading others with 40+ mph with same setup. Also noticed that after running continuous various speeds for about 2.5 hours the gas gauge barely changed. Happily surprised but cautious about accuracy. Wont know for sure until I fill back up. Still running Mercury fuel treatments thru this tank load. Dont have a tach, but sound wise doesnt sound like over reving and prop is original SS Quik Silver. Next time I get to boat will check prop size. Would like to think it was setup properly 10 years ago.

The other thing is your comparing a 4-stroke to 2-stroke. I'd take the extra weight.

Absolutely nothing wrong with a new 2 stroke.

Both have advantages and disadvantages.

If you are selecting a 4 stroke just because it is heavier, that doesn't make much sense.

I may repower my 1991 Outrage this spring. I currently have a 90hp Evinrude Ocean Pro. I have put 120 hours on this combination in two seasons and while thirsty it performs very well. This fall I recorded a hair over 41 mph (per GPS) in near perfect conditions. This was with a lite load and cheap aluminium TP 17 pitch prop.

I'm leaning towards the Evinrude E-tec 90 because like Phil I know this particular Whaler is sensitive to stern weight. It should be noted that I am a fisherman primarily and that I never pull skiers. If I did, I would most likely opt for more HP. From reviewing Evinrude's performance reports I expect to loose a couple of mph with the E-tec 90 but gain in fuel economy and reliability.

That is the "sprue hole".

When the boat was made, the hull and deck pieces are put together and bonded. The hole is for the injection nozzle and for the excess foam to escape.

Every classic whaler has a sprue hole. The Outrage 17 has a nice finished cover. Some models don't.

Reinstall the cover and then caulk the seam with some polysulfide caulk.
