I have the same 1978 and just replaced the cooler with the Igloo 94qt which is the newer replacement. Look it up in the OEM Parts Index on the right hand menu list. I also purchased the cushion set (cooler top and rod holder backs) from Specialty Marine.

I did remove the original chocks and moved them toward the bow about an inch so the new cooler would fit better against the console. I also had to move the original snaps on the rod holder to line up with the new cushions snaps, it was quite easy.

That info is in our "OEM Part Photos and Info" link on the left sidebar.

Look under "Cooler"

If you rotate the cooler so the hinges face forward, the new cooler fits in the existing OEM cleats.

I just got a 94 qt marine Igloo at West Marine online and they threw in a free seat cushion. Check their website and if you search the web you will also find a free $10 off and free shipping. total for everything shipped was $134

I just picked up a 94 quart Igloo marine cooler with cushion for around $110 at a local Gander Mt.

Here is a monster I just saw at Costco. Igloo 165 qt for $88.99 this thing seats 2 easily but has no cushion. http://www.flickr.com/photos/45988259...586560712/

While nice, the 165 qt will not fit and will not let anyone move to the bow. The original question speaks to the OEM cooler seat size.
