My fuel gauge reads low I think. I pulled it out and when the cork is totally down it reads empty. when it is 90 degrees from verticle it reads 1/2 and when it is fully up it reads full. The gauge seems to be reading fine but i think the cork is saturated. i have about 25 gallons in the 60 gallon tank of my 1984 18 outrage and it is reading 1/8 of a tank. I understand it is better to have a reserve but it gets me nervous when I see it below empty and I still have 10-15 gallons left. Can I buy a replacement cork?

Ok. Here is what i did. I went to the hardware store and bought a cirk stopper. It is a little larger at the top and a littler smaller at the bottom but overall boyancy is about the same as original. I filed the sender shaft to remove the old cork(which was twice the weight as the new one). I drilled a hole in the new shaft to accept an r-clip to hold the new cork in place. Before assembly i coated the cork with west system epoxy. My concern is if the ethanol will attack the epoxy but west has directions on how to build a gas tank so im thinking not. I will keep you posted. The good news is the old float read almost empty, the new float reads 1/4 so i think its fixed.
