Is this mounted too low?

Yes......

That motor is mounted all the way down...
Try raising it all the way up.....
If that is too high, then lower it down one hole....

I have a question, If you have a 17 whaler how were you able to use the lower mounting holes slot on the engine? How long are those bolts? Did you go through the entire Transom. This set up would have called for the use of blind holes on the engine.

The depth of the splashwell was increased in (apparently) 1987. I had thought the change occurred in 1988. This change may have coincided with the change to the mold for the wider bow locker.

Chuck Bennett at Whaler has told me that a change was made to one mold for the 16'-7" hulls while they still used an older mold concurrently, thus some boats produced at the same time could have the older small bow locker and others the wider bow locker.

I am speculating that the splashwell change, which allowed full BIA bolt pattern drilling, may be limited to this newer mold with the wider bow locker. Chuck was recalling that detail from his own memory as they did not keep detailed notes about the minor mold changes back then.

We haven't followed this change in our Montauk series.
Maybe it is time we start asking what owners have on their Montauks and other later 16' 7" hulls to find the exact year...
As it stands now according to Tom, 1987/1988 models have the deeper splashwell.

There are quite a few changes we track including hinges, consoles, etc..

I just dug through some old email. Here is what Chuck wrote to me after I inquired about design changes to the 16'-7" hull in the 1980s:

Hi Tom,

Unfortunately, no one ever wrote down a time frame on mold changes in our old records.

Someone scratched down the wider locker with the diamond nonskid pattern running from 1988-2002, although, I believe we were running some of the newer and older molds during the 80's, so it would be difficult to say.

I thought the deeper motorwell was around the same time frame.

If I can find anything else on this, I'll let you know.

Regards,
Chuck

Never knew this about the splash well depth change, Never gave it a second though as long as the engines came with a blind mounting hole....

rvshulz,

Can you give us your HIN and Stencil number so we can add you to the list of changes for the Montauk?

It seems you have the earliest deeper splashwell that we know of at this time until we hear from other Montauk owners..
