Thread subject: Whaler Central - Boston Whaler Boat Information and Photos :: Norman Pin

In the process of rehabing our whaler I removed the paint from the Norman pin that the PO had painted it with. Now that all the paint has been removed, how or what do I put on it to keep it from turning green again? thank you all in advance

You need to have it rechromed as the chrome plating has worn off. That would keep it original, or you can buy a new stainless one if your not a purist.

I was to understand that they were Brass and the replacement were polished stanless steel???

Yeah most of the replacements are stainless steel, but you can find original brass ones. BW chrome plated brass on the norman pins and pretty much all other things like rail fittings and things like that. They actually used a very high quality of chrome plating that was the same type Harley Davidson used. That is why they lasted so long. It is up to you, I personally got the stainless, but if you rechrome it, it will last a long time if done right.

I actually like the greenish, brassy patina mine has and plan to leave it that way. I have a '74 hull and even though I've refurbished my boat, my intention was to never bring it back to "factory". My pin is original, it works, and it looks cool. If I did have a need to have a chrome pin, I'd have the original re-chromed locally.

Older pins are either bronze or brass (I'm thinking it's bronze). Even the threaded rod that connects the two pieces are made from the same material. No chrome plating. Don't know when they changed to chrome or stainless.

I agree blindeman I have all my rail fittings that are green and they do look cool. I plan to let it stay original and worn looking to give it some character. Plus I don't want to have to reseal everything!
