Stock Whaler brass cabinet catches will foul after exposure to salt water and other corrosive environments. The problem is with the springs that provides tension to the brass ball bearings. They are NOT stainless, and deteriorate quickly in a saltwater marine environment. The rust and debris from the springs clogs the ball bearings. I found an exact match, with the traditional brass housing, but with stainless steel springs and ball bearings. They work flawlessly.
These are ABI Cabinet Catch, polished Brass, item number 351510 (2045BR). They have a five year warranty, if bought retail. The manufacturer is:
ABI
1160-A Industrial Avenue
Petaluma, CA 94952
www.abimarine.com
ABI does not do direct sales to the public, but has a wholesale distributor in Benecia, California that drop ships from the factory. For sales, contact Marine Mail Order. Friendly folks, speak with Sarah at 1-888-228-6758. $1.49 each plus actual shipping. Unfortunatly, this distributor does not ship the item with the mounting screws. See:
marinemailorder.com
If you would like mounting screws, the following retail distributor ships a complete product that includes screws. $2.99 each.

Great info Rob.
Rob was kind enough to send me a pair of these latches so I took a photo and added them to the OEM Parts Photos page. Thanks Rob.

so joe,,
are the latches along with the perko hinges the way my console doors were original? Maybe that's why someone replaced the hinges with self closing?
What is the opinion of going with self closing hinges? I've found a couple of sites that have brass and/or chrome over brass.
Not looking to save money necessarily , just want easy access on Ocean to my stuff in the console. I need to add that my batteries were movved out of console by previous owner so i have tons of storage in the console.
tks
again

Rich,
The brass hinges above were of the original style.
The hinges were Perko and were not self closing.
The self closing hinges would not help you with the larger door that faces the the rear of the console as this door drops down. There is no way this large door could self close.
I am an original nut so I would only put original hardware on the console.
There are however several items on the boat that could be upgraded, just not the console doors for me...
