I have a 1985 OMC control box on my Evinrude 50, and I was thinking of adding a tach. Rather than spending $40 on a factory harness, I figured I could easily assemble one. I have 3-wire boat cable and terminals. Does anyone have the specs (size/make/etc) for an appropriate plug that fits into the slot on the control? Or at least a close up picture of one? Thanks!

You can buy the fitting from OMC/BRP if needed...

However, it depends on the tach you purchase.
Some tachs are called plug in tachs and have the pigtail already to plug-in.

Others do not have the plug-in and are wired directly to the terminals on the tach.

If I remember correctly, there are 3 wires to the tach not including the blue for the light.
1. Purple (key on power)
2. Gray (pulse for tach)
3. Black (ground)

See this photo in the middle left you will see the plug-in for the tach and the 3 colored wires mentioned above.

Thanks Joe - I did review your project writeup, which is great! I was going to keep it simple, so I guess I'm just looking for that black 3-wire plug in the middle left of your picture. Is that a part that can be sourced individually?

Mike,

You would have to take a look on the BRP Online Parts Catalog to see if those plugs are available.

I know I have purchased plugs in the past for many things like trim & tilt, and of course, all the individual pins, plugs, etc. on the System Check I just did.

If you want to keep it simple, then don't use any plugs at all.
Just wire the 3 wires directly to the tach...
