1985 Outrage 18 minor refit (Marko888's Personal Page) 11/08/2011
Here is the 1985 Outrage 18 as we found her in Iowa, fall of 2011:

Between then and summer 2013, I completed the following:

- Removed casting platform from the bow,
- Removed and inspected floor and fuel tank, fxed broken sump cover support, replaced fuel filler, vent and supply lines,
- Rebuilt the console, including: New plywood backing for binnacle, dash and switch panel areas, and filling in all of the excess holes, plus complete re-gelcoat, and a lot of block sanding to get it looking nice again. I would just buy a new one next time!
- New dash panels, switches and wiring
- Replaced control cables,
- New SeaStar hydraulic steering system
- Refinished all console teak
- Stripped awful dark coating from RPS and refinished with Dalys Seafin Teak oil
- Re-wired most of the boat
- Filled excess screw holes around the hull
- Wet sanded old numbers from hull using 2000 grit: Installed new die-cut registration numbers
- Built new, replacement teak gunwale caps, as the originals had been drilled and plugged so many times, plus had the same awful coating on them as the RPS, that I didnt think I could make them look nice again.
- Shortened the side rails
- Switched out the original painted trailer for a 2008 galvanized King with keel rollers and bunks
- Installed Black Duck Gallery Outrage cooler chocks
- Installed a Standard Horizon PS2000 radio with GAM SS-2 antenna
- Made a teak dash top board, finished with the same angles and curves as the teak doors, blind mounted from below, so electronics could be added, moved, replaced, without the need to drill dozens of holes in the repaired console.

Here is a shot from the summer of 2013:

48 quart Igloo cooler with perfect, slightly interference, fit under the RPS:

- For 2014, she will have a Furuno GP1870 GPS/FF, NMEA 200 network and a Suzuki DF140A

Mark, The RPS looks great. I'm not sure if everything in other pics is original as I'm not a BW expert, but it looks that way. Im curious about the bow platform and chair mod. Did you keep that configuration? I'd be interested to see more pics of that if possible. Looking forward to seeing how it came out!

I removed the bow platform and tossed it in the tip. It was pretty ugly to my eye, nad doesn't apply to the use we will make of the boat. It was installed quite well though...with no screw holes into the hull...thank fully. I added a photo for you to check out.

That's an original Wise Captains Chair but the pedestal base appears to have been cut down in height. Looks to be in great condition.

Thanks joe...I'd sell the chair and shortened pedestal if someone wants it.

Mark, I'm not sure if this is the right place for this but I just read the thread about mounting a vhf antenna and wanted to know what you ended up doing and if your happy with it? I recently bought a 8 foot fiberglass and had planned on mounting to the side of my console but after reading that thread I'm considering changing to the ss2 whip mounted to the rail.

re my VHF, I mounted a GAM SS-2 with ADAP II mount on top of a 2' Shakespeare Galaxy 5228-2 extension, on a stainless folding bracket, on the top of my shepherds crook. I haven't found the field-of-view obstruction to bother me at all. The antenna is above everyone's heads, and is out of the way for fishing. I get complimented all the time on the range and clarity I get with my radio.

Marko, Beautiful job. We did a similar amount of work on our Montauk last summer. Planning on taking her up to BC from SF Bay next summer. We'll probably rent a cottage on one of the Gulf Islands. If you have any good recommendations, we'd love to hear from you! Enjoy the Outrage! Ciao

Hi Marko, What a great fishing machine you have there. I have a 1988 Outrage 18 that I repowered last spring with that great Suzuki DF 140A. I chatted with DennisVollrath about engine mounting height (same boat & engine). His is mounted 3 holes up (1 from the highest) and is happy with that, but does break the prop free under some conditions. He thought that you were at 2 holes up. If so, are you satisfied with that? Mine was installed 1 hole up and although she runs well, I think I might see some improvement going up a hole or 2. I would really appreciate any info you can give me. Thanks, Rich

Rich, Mine is also 3-holes up, and I think it's perfect. Dennis and I are friends and I had thought he went one lower than I, but it sounds like we are the same. I do not do full power hard turns much. Perhaps our weight distributions are a bit different. I did tend to trim the motor up too high in my first summer with it, but after running with a much more experienced friend of mine, learned to not trim it as high.

Thanks for the info Marko. Looks like I'll move her up 2 holes.
