Hi All

I’m hoping that you can help me. I acquired a 1990 outrage 20 last year. I trailer the boat and I have been cursing the lack of drain bung. I also wondered why the decks where not self draining as they are clearly above the water line.

Please excuse my ignorance here but in the aft starboard corner there is a small sump with a bulge pump in. At the bottom of this sump is what appears to be the remains of a rubber drain bung. Firstly can someone please confirm that this is a drain hole? And secondly can the boat be operated with this plug out? What are the pros and cons of this.

Many thanks

Chris

I do not know of a 1990 Outrage 20

Do you have the year or model correct?

Hi Joe, thanks for your reply. I too am a little confused! She looks identical to the <89 model outrage 20, however the hull number ends in 90 which I believed made her a 1990 boat? Hopefully there is now a pic of her below!

I did not see in the picture a brass through drain in the hull below the water line on the starboard side of the hull. Do you have through drains on the boat? There should be several of them and when on a trailer would allow drainage. You mentioned "....the remains of a rubber drain bung (plug/tube?)......". Is this an intact drain tube? The brass through drain tubes are 3" to 5" long. I did see a Whaler (same style hull) where one of the previous owners filled in and sealed all through drain tubes. I recently was chatting with Chuck at BW regarding bilge pumps hull lay outs (I have a 1979 22' Revenge) and there was a factory option for bilge pumps in the rigging tunnel by the stern (factory plug location there) as well as in the deep chamber that is in front of the console. That chamber should have a drain tube on the bottom.

Hi gchuba,Thanks for your response. There are 2 through hull drains, One in the forward locker and 1 under a small flap on the starboard side, The forward one works perfectly, the rear one was stuck, i have removed it along with the remains of the brass tube, It looks like the previous owner had gunged it up with sealer, The foam was exposed to water and i'm a little worried about it being water logged although she doesn't seem excessively heavy.

I guess now, i have 2 questions.

1. Does anyone know where i may get a new through hull tube and plug?
2. Once i have replaced this tube can i operate the boat with this plug out and have self draining decks?

many thanks

Chris.

It is important that you replace the drain tube properly. The brass tube and O rings and flaring tool are available for purchase.

The sole Whaler dealer in England is Dorset Yacht in Hamworthy. Are you within driving distance? Call them to see if they have the skill to do it.

As to running the boat with plugs in or out.

Most Outrage 17-25 owners run with the bow locker and splashwell plugs left out. The bilge and fish lockers are plugged and have bilge pumps.

Hey Chris Poole is only about 3 hours drive by car so not to bad or 6 hours by boat with your Outrage 20, but make sure you stop the water infiltration.
Poole is a as picturesque as Par and make sure you visit Brownsea Island or any other in the bay there it is a great boating area.
Good luck with the repair.

Many thanks for all of the replies, In an attempt to remove the plug, the brass tube came out with it! It's corroded away on the end so i will install a new Moeller 1" Drain tube and set this in on marine epoxy.

I don't know if i'd want to put the fuel in the boat for the 6 hour treck too poole but it's a thought!

Thanks for your help once again.

If you can't source the exact tube (flared on one end) 0 rings AND flaring tool, contact Sue Lodel, Parts Manager @ Twin Cities in the US state of Wisconsin.

She is the parts source and ships internationally all the time. She is great.

When I removed the drain tubes on my 1979 Revenge I found that the gel coat/hull thickness left very tolerance if damaged for installing the replacements. The flaring of the brass ends leaves you with about 1/8th" (maybe 3/16th) to seal and it needs a very tight fit on the gel coat. Second, I do not recall many true 90 angles on the hull for the pre flared tubes to seat 100%. From what you are describing I would recommend pictures and a full analysis of what you have. Run it past the club members. A lot of fellows have made this repair and some with alternative methods. If the holes are compromised you may go something other than original 1" replacement. Possibly sizing up the brass tube diameter and delicately sizing up the original holes. I believe 1-1/4" brass tubes are available. This is a very delicate and important repair. Do study and do not jump into it too quick.

Hi, I have just bought a Boston Whaler Newport 17 and when removing the stern bung the sleeve insert come out, as per the above post. Any advice?

I could seal it up and push it back in, but I’m worried about water getting in behind the other end as it is rusted in areas?
