I dropped off my 1990 Outrage 22 Whalerdrive for a repower with twin Suzuki DF140a motors today. I sure could use some help on mounting height and prop selection. I tried the Mercury prop selector tool but it does not list the 140 motors in the twin motor calculator only the 150. I was thinking mounting 2 holes up with a 21-22 pitch ss prop. The boat has the 77 gallon tank with a top. Typical load is anywhere from 300 - 800 pounds. Any thoughts or recommendations?
On a 22 Whaler Drive, twin engines should be up in the fifth holes, if the engine brackets have them.
If not, use the fourth holes, but you may not get optimum performance, and may get some gearcase spray. I have seen that problem with older Johnson 150 2-strokes.
The Mercury prop selector will not work for Suzuki, since the Mercs use higher (numerically lower) gear ratios. You should, however, be able to use the Merc selector using the 115PRO XS engine, actually about the same HP at the prop as the Suzuki 140's. The prop they recommend should give top speed indications. I would guess your boat will run about 45 MPH. Those 140's are pushing the weight limit on the hull, since they weigh more than the 2-stroke 150's (about 380# each) the hull was designed for.
The current 1990 Mercury 135 motors as I’ve found out are 407 lbs each. The Suzuki 140 406 lbs each. With the 2x2 stroke oil tanks in the transom the weight should be about equal. As for the Suzuki hp ratings that seems to be an internet myth. However I looked heavily at the 115 Pro XS Command Thrust unfortunately they do not offer the ProXS in counter rotation. I called Mercury to see if I can order one seeing that the standard 115 CT is available with CR. No such luck.
