We have a 19' 1991 Outrage. There is a crack in the gelcoat on the top of the transom. We want to add a kicker engine but are concerned that if water was to get into the crack, it might rot from the inside. Does anyone know what the transom on our boat is made out--is it wood? Unfotunately I have been unable to successfully attach a picture.

Marine grade fir plywood, and yes, it will rot. You should seal it with either a marine sealant, or epoxy.

The reason why the top of the transom gelcoat has cracked is that the thick piece of plywood making the core of the stern section has gotten wet with water/moisture and has expanded thus cracking the fiberglass and gelcoat. To fill and resurface the fissure area will not cure the problem. To dry the wood out would be the thing. It will sometime take years in a 70F' minimum temperature to dry up these hulls. To stop water intrusion will be the ultimate cure for these problems.
