I have a 1990 22 Outrage w/whalerdrive that has twin Mercury 135 motors. I would like to hear experiences from others that have converted from twins to single outboards. The price of twins versus a single is cost prohibitive. Besides removing the center brace and drilling new and repairing old transom holes what else should be considered. Any and all advice is appreciated.

I'm curious what kind of price quotes are you getting for a single 250 or 300 HP engine?
If I owned a 22 Outrage w/Whalerdrive I'd look hard at twin Merc 115 Fourstrokes with the CT gear case. A pair of these installed should be around $17-18K. They are strong, relatively lightweight four strokes (2.1L each, w/ 4 cylinders). They put out about 10HP more than their cowl indicates, so you'd have roughly 250 HP or so on the transom. Available in counter rotating. Just a suggestion!
I’ve looked at the Merc motors that were mentioned as well as all the offerings from different mfgs. I’ve read favorable reviews on owners that switched from twins to a single. I’m hoping to get a more mechanical update on converting such as filling transom bolt holes, removal of the support rod, batteries, wiring, rigging etc. As much as I’d like to run with twins the single has a huge economical benefit.
