Included in price was setting up new trailer for my older boat and putting my boat on new trailer. Does that sound like a good price for trailer and set-up??

Member Posts: 1 Comments: 0 Joined: 07/08/12	Just bought one in Seattle for my 1985 Montauk. Rated at 1800 lbs. With tax and license it came to 1800 bucks. It is a bunk trailer so I am adding 2 keel rollers as well, another 120. Nice trailer but I can not move the axle.

Member Posts: 1925 Comments: 16 Joined: 05/02/08	A friend of mine has one of those 170 Montauk Karavan trailers under his classic Montauk. As far as i am concerned, shame on Whaler for putting such a cheap trailer under a 170 Montauk. It is one of the most minimally designed and outfitted trailers you can buy. Karavan is considered a good brand, but Whaler really cheaped out on specifying this one. There is nothing to it. It only has two cross members, bolted instead of welded, which gives the trailer very little laterally strength and will cause squeaks and eventaully rust at the bolts. the frame is hollow tubing instead of structural "C" Channel. Cross members are what make a trailer solid and rigid. Then it only has two bunks to support the boat. Bunks are a fraction of the cost of an array of Stoltz rollers on SS shafts. In this one, you get what you pay for, and that is not much. I would think twice about buying one. On my personal page, take a look at the 2000# carrying capacity trailer under my classic Montauk. There is no comparison between the two trailers. And it cost $1350 including the Stoltz 12" keel roller. Phil - this trailer may work for your 17 Outrage also? I am thinking twice about this trailer. When I first looked at it I figured well this has got to be good for my boat since I have a Whaler , an this is what Whaler is putting under their boats, don't want to regret buying this trailer"down the road". Yes I'm sure it would serve its purpose , I'm only a mile from boat ramp and very good with maintaining trailer.

There are those who live close to the ramp, only store the boat on the trailer in the off season, trailer for the annual or biannual trip and those that trailer distances on a frequent basis. I have seen the Karavan trailers under Boston Whalers and they are decent, basic and cost effective. Given that trailer dealers are regional, owners have to take into consideration what brands are available within a reasonable driving distance. I think the Karavan Richie is looking at is decent, worthy of consideration. For my uses, I still need to shop Continental, Load Rite and Hustler to see how they stack up. I like Load - rite trailers as well , I have a 7000# Load-Rite double axle trailer I use for my other boat (Edgewater 20'CC)I keep at marina , and use trailer to put in an pull out an store for winter. I can get a load-rite for my Montauk if I want. However I know the BW salesman and I saw the Karavan , with Whaler stickers etc, and at $1600 it came in cheaper then the load-rite so I figured I give it a try.

Member Posts: 1675 Comments: 0 Joined: 03/31/13	From observing trailer construction over the years.......I would never purchase a galvanized trailer with tubing construction. Many a time I see the tubing rusting from the inside out. The welds are structural and not meant to be water tight. I would go with channel construction. You do not see the problem till it breaks. Might appear as a weld starting to rust from the outside but the interior tubing walls are compromised. My 2 cents if buying new. Garris

I checked out the Continental trailers before, and I think galvanized they were in the 1800 ish range these days. That is with all the upgrades. I am emailing a few dealers to find the best deals.
