I just purchased a 1985 Montuak that needs some TLC. The cleat for the front ice chest/seat are all that are on the boat. Does anyone have a good suggestion on how to mount an ice chest in front of the console?

If you want to go with the original design:
The chocks are sized for a Igloo Marine Cooler. Bungies attach to the handle of the cooler.

About this time in 2015 I got a 1989 Montauk. I had a friend fabricate the cooler cleats from mohogany, got a 90 qt Igloo from Lowes (best price I could find) and got the hooks from Sue at Twin Cities. Adding the bungee cords wasnt too bad with some trial and error for the length. Anderson cushions are excellent and great people to deal with (like Sue). They come with snaps you need to install. There is a photo on my web page.
Good luck with your boat. I put over 200 hours on mine in 2 seasons of fishing, crabbing and clamming near Ocean City, NJ and love it.

Do the cleats install angled to fit the profile of the deck? The deck is not flat up front so the chest would be tilted toward the back I think.

This is the best photo I could find. The cleats fasten to the floor in the depressed are on an angle that matches the contour of that area.

Here is a photo of the mahogany cleats we made. I got the 3/8" bungee at a hardware store and bought some clips to crimp on the ends from EBay.

A little off topic, but if you plan on doing any gel coat restoration, I highly recommend the 3M Gel Coat Perfect It rubbing compound. This is a fairly new product so I didn't find many reviews on it before I tried it out, however I was very pleased with the results. I just finished buffing my new to me 1984 Montauk and the gel coat looks great for a boat of this age. The rubbing compound has a finishing material in it that leaves a great deep shine. I can send you some photos if you'd like.

Looks like Walmart has the 94 qt. cooler for $119 and Lowes is $132 or so.
Black Duck has the cleats for $100 I think. Their stuff is excellent.

Thanks for all the great info. Pics would be great. Did you use the compound by hand or use a polisher? I was thinking of using the polisher i use on my truck...
Tried googling for Black Duck....no luck. Do they have a website or number?

I'm refinishing the teak on my boat. I've started on the bench. Has anyone painted the bench supports. (Ones above the fuel tank in front of the console)
I'm thinking of painting them....

I would love to see your pics. The gel coat is a little faded and I will try your suggestion on the 3M Gell Coat Perfect!

Put down the paint brush and slowly step away from the can.
Almost all wood can be restored with not alot of effort.
The Montauk wooden parts were all teak. With a little sanding and some teak oil, it will come back. Yearly maintenance is just another application of oil. If a year round boater, make it every 6 months.
Same goes for gelcoat. If sun faded, it can be restored to its tan and shiny self with some fiberglass rubbing compound and a variable speed buffer with a wool bonnet.

Oh sorry, I'm not painting any teak! I've started restoring the teak. My question was on the Z bench seat supports. I guess they are made of fiberglass or plastic. They are very faded dark brown...

I used Penetrol on the RPS legs, worked in gently with a maroon abrasive pad. Really brought them back to life.
