Sorry for the questions.
Yes I'm a Nubie.
So I found what I think is a good deal on a 170 Montauk.
I'm upgrading from a 14' Tinner. Need something more friendly in strong winds and chop.
I'd also like something I could ski behind.
Does this 170 make sense and is it a good boat.
I am new to boating and have a water access cottage on a 30 mile long lake.

Thanks

Love my 2013 MT170! I've customized mine considerably. We tuna fish 30 miles off shore in the Pacific Ocean, tow the kids tubing and can even manage 8 lobster pots aboard during lobster season. I'd be happy to look at your deal and let you know opinion about it....for whatever that is worth. Its a big upgrade from a 14' tin boat and the MT170 is big for a 17 IMHO. Will

Yes, Montauks are certainly good boats. However, I don't believe any 17 foot boat is going to be a smooth ride in a chop although the Montauk will do about as well as the others. For it's size the Montauk is, IMO, about the best boat on the water.

I bought a 2004 Montauk 170 with a 4 stroke 90hp Mercury a couple years ago. It has been a perfect family boat. I have pulled kids (& adults) on tubes without difficulty. I am very confident in the boat and reasonably confident in the outboard despite its age. I would recommend the Montauk 170 without reservation.

What do you consider a good deal, let us know and enough here can tell you if it is so.
Bottom line you can't go wrong with a Montauk 170, what a great all around boat for fishing, family, watersports, etc.

Amazing boat. They will take you wherever you want to go, and back. I still have mine.

Check out this website. Not trying to sell the book, just explaining how far a 17-Montauk can take you. https://onlyinamerica-web.sharepoint.com/Pages/BuytheBooks.aspx

So the Montauk 170 in question is a 2012, one owner, with 5 hours on the 90 Merc.
Bimini, Fishing package, bow cushion ...
Asking is $25900 Canadian so about $18500 USD

What do you think?

I have been pondering this for a week and I say go for it.

The boat is ideal for large lakes and activities. The price is decent if the boat is in good condition. I would focus on the motor and especially the trailer given the long haul home.

When you get ready to trailer home, start a new thread and we can help prepare you and trailer for the trip.

goesnsnow That sounds reasonable maybe slightly high but 5 hrs (have a mechanic give you a history printout on the engine) is unbelievable if true. You still would have 2 seasons of Mercury warranty left.
I see fresh water 170 here for slightly less and sometime slightly more so if the boat and trailer check out it would be a decent deal and pleasure for the next 20 years.

G2, just thinking out of the box, can you find someone who lives near the boat's current location who might be able to help? They might be able to go look at it, take some pics, possibly even store it for a while. Or even, if you find the right person, be willing to drive it to you for the price of gas, and maybe some time at your place on the lake. Hey, if I needed a vacation and lived near, I might do it!

I looked at the map and there sure are lots of great places to boat near you.

Tim
