I installed my 22 gallon Moeller tank with 1 inch straps. There is a circular cover on my boat deck (1985 Montauk 17) that prevents the gas tank from sitting flush on the deck. Is there a better way to install the tank so that the tank feels more secure? I noticed in some pictures that people have some kind of rubber or wooden mat underneath the tank. Also, am I better off with the permanent installation brackets rather than the 1 inch removable straps?

The circular cover is not original and was installed by a prior owner or dealer. I am interested and concerned why it was done. A photo ?

The boat originally came with twin fuel tanks with rubber mats that were riveted into the deck. These mats are no longer available.

One option members use to protect the deck from fuel tanks is to install several pieces of Dri-Dek or strips of starboard (composite material).

I used a strap wrapping and attached to the RPS legs instead of drilling holes into the deck.

Phil I'll send a photo this weekend when I'm back near the boat. It appears it was installed to more easily snake electrical wiring from the console to the rear.

I removed it so the gas tank sits flush on the deck, but now there is a hole underneath the gas tank. I have to say, good thing I changed my gas line it was riddled with over expansion areas and bubbles (effects of ethanol maybe?).

Any suggestions on how I can plug the big hole? It's circular and about 3" x 2".

Thanks for the suggestions I'll look into Dri-Dek or starboard.
