Fill large splash well and transom hole advice

Member Posts: 30 Comments: 0 Joined: 06/13/14	I'm looking for some advice on how to go about filling a rather large hole in my thru my splash well. The hole is about 1 3/4 x 4" deep. The previous owner ran the drain tube for the bilge through it rather than just running it over the back. Since it's mostly foam and not structural I was considering using some spray insulation can foam from Home Depot but I'm not sure if I will be able to get polyester resin or gelcoat to stick to it. Or should I fill with a large dowel? There's also another hole in the transom, you can see there was an 1 1/2" piece of PVC there (possibly for some sort of drain) that I removed. I'm not sure if I can use a dowel for this or just fill with some Evercoat 27 and fiberglass....any suggestions? Thanks! Member Posts: 754 Comments: 4 Joined: 12/31/06	I just finished filling in holes in the transom area of my 1971 BW16 hull. First, I cut plugs (not dowels) from a scrap piece of pacific northwest fir of sufficient size to fill the hole. If the plugs were not long enough, I cut another plug(s) so I had enough wood to fill the hole. Then I wetted the area with water and glued the plug in place using gorilla glue. I like gorilla glue because it expanded into any voids. Then I used polyester resin to seal the hole; let it dry, sanded the area, and applied matching gelcoat. I have a photograph of the transom located on my website. If you have a hole that needs to be filled and it is less than 1/2 inch, you can use polyester resin mixed with cabosil.

I Just wasn't sure how to get the depth I needed... so you basically cut a couple of plugs and glued them together to make them fill the correct depth. Any ideas for that splash well hole? There's nothing in there but foam so I don't really have anything for a plug or a dowel to stick too...
