I just Re powered my 1963 13' Boston whaler with a used 1995 40 hp Evinrude.. 2 stroke. oil injection.
Model # E4OEEOD. Check everything(compression , etc,..) and gave quick tune up (Plugs, lower oil unit,) before my first start in the driveway. Started in driveway and ran for about 10 minutes in my driveway(water pumping great.. everything sounded and ran great ( no horn except when first turn key on for short second). Took to lake for first test run today. When I turned key on the horn starts steady beep(even before starting engine), started engine runs perfect.. still steady beep. . I pump the oil ball and check for any leaks. I take off oil hose and pump oil ball, oil comes out easily and steady. turn key and run engine again... Still steady beep. turned off.. unplugged wires to the oil tank...(tan /black wire connector on starter side of engine).. beep stops. Starts and runs great and yet when i plug in wire to oil tank steady non- stop beep. I ran around the lake at 25 mph for about 15 minutes.. Still runs great and yet as long as the wire is plugged in to the oil tank the horn is steady beep.

Help? what should i test. please help me make sense of this.. obvious no over heating issue since it beeps steady before i even started. And the engine ran well with no signs of overheating at all. I thought no oil / low oil is a beep, beep, beep not steady. . Oil tank is 3/4 full.

You need to conduct further diagnostics. A steady alarm usually means overheat. However, Seahorse, an OMC/BRP expert, wrote this on alarms: "On 1995 and earlier alarm systems, the oil tank level sender has a computer chip in it to signal a beep every 20-40 seconds. Sometimes when it goes bad, you will hear a steady horn sound, or sometimes a "warbeling" or muted buzz. Disconnect the oil tank wiring at the motor and see if the sound disappears. If so, you can either replace the sending and pickup unit, or leave it disconnected and watch the oil level often. You could also have a shorted to ground tan wire anywhere from the horn connection, thru the boat wiring, or on the engine harness."

Ok, Problem fixed no beeping and runs perfect. sending unit in oil tank was acting up. replaced complete tank and unit with great used one for $50 from Ernie Ryan Outboards in Gardena ca. He has an awesome selection of good used parts and is a wealth of information on older outboards.
Thanks for your help!
Happy Thanksgiving

Here is the article we have here on WhalerCentral:

Also, anytime you disconnect the oil line to change or work on the system, you should bleed the oil line and also run mixed fuel until you are certain the new repairs are actually delivering oil to the motor.
