1995 Outrage 17' Nav Light

Member Posts: 10 Comments: 0 Joined: 07/26/14	Hi all, I am new to this forum, not new to Whalers. My father picked up a 1995 17-Foot Outrage today. It is missing the starboard side Nav Light. The previous owner put some kind of patched-cover over the cowling and sealed it into place. I told my father I would get online to see if anyone knows where to find a replacement. At this point not sure if it's just a bulb and cover lens, or what. All my internet searches turn up is that this is a hard to find part. Any help appreciated. There are two, one on each side of the keel. They will ruin the night vision of everyone on your boat and any other boat near you. People using their spot light at night, swinging it around blinding everyone within a mile should be ticketed. And their spot light confiscated. Anyway, there should be some manufacturer info somewhere on the light. I winter in Ft. Myers and summer in St. Joseph, Michigan. It’s now about 12 years since I’ve joined this group. I gave my 1972 whaler to my daughter and sold the 17’. Bought an O’Day 28 sailboat and sailed on Lake Michigan. Yesterday I bought a 2005 130 Sport.

I am sure you can find exact replacements with a search for docking lights. I use mine at night and in the fog on my Whaler 27 and I have never gotten any complaints from other boaters about them. I use a couple of MUCH brighter LED lights on the Outrage 18 at night. I think it is important for me to be able to see clearly in order to navigate in a safe way for my passengers, as well as myself. I once was in the water in the ICW with a really bad undertow for over 1hr and could not swim out of it. I was there as a result of a brother-in-law hitting a floating timber just below the surface with the lower unit of the boat motor. I was sitting in the bow seat with my back to the wind, and the force of the sudden stop actually broke the back of the seat I was in and sent me tumbling straight over the bow. I was pulled from the water and revived just before death and have now lived another 30 years. Pardon me, but I will continue to use lights as I see fit to insure both my own and my passengers safety as I navigate. I do not boat in Michigan at all anymore, and I rarely boat in Florida, certainly not near Fort Myers so your "night vision" should be safe. I know my own "night vision" is VASTLY improved as a result of the lighting :)

I have only seen them on larger Whalers however I guess any dealer or owner could have installed them. They are called "Flush-Mount Forward Docking Lights". Member Posts: 1675 Comments: 0 Joined: 03/31/13	I was interested in retrofitting a pair of the docking lights on my hull, 1979 22' Revenge, after I saw them on a larger Whaler (thouht they looked cool). Decided against it for a couple of reasons. Silly to cut a hole in my hull, contacted Coast Guard (was at the Marina at the time) and he stated the use of them underway was illegal. Subpart C Lights and Shapes, 83.20 Application (Rule 20) "....sunset to sunrise...." "....during such times no other lights shall be exhibited, except such lights as can be mistaken for lights specified in these rules...". Should only be used when docking. One dark morning when leaving port for for fishing, the boat behind me had some sort of spot light that blinded me, reflected on the rule, not only illegal but rude. Garris

I owned one for 7 years and it was great. I personally agree with Garris (don't ever cut into a Whaler unless you have to). I used a hand held spot from the console when in the dark. Less overhead and more flexibility. Make sure your Dad checks the seal on the light enclosure where they enter the hull. There should be a good seam of caulk. Don't want water getting in there. I have always tried to maintain my night vision so I can see what's happening on all points around my boat, not where my headlights are pointing. Safety is my primary concern.
