Gas Tanks for Sakonnet

Member Personal Page Posts: 59 Comments: 0 Joined: 04/02/12	Trying to figure out what to do about gas tanks or tank for my 1963 Sakonnet. I would like to have the tank under the console, however due to the cables coming up out of the channel in the middle of the console it makes it difficult to fit a single tank underneath the console. I have a leaning post with room underneath hwoever I was hoping to have it under the console. Would the weight distribution be better with it more centered under the leaning post or under the console. I could also put 2 6 gallon tanks on either side of the steering cables and wiring coming from the channel...Any advice or experience here?

Member Posts: 1925 Comments: 16 Joined: 05/02/08	The console is designed to accomodate two 12 gallon aluminized steel Tempo or Mirax tanks. The newer 12 gallon Moeller 12 gallon plastic red tanks also fit. You may have to raise the console just slightly (which is good thing anyway) for adequate clearance. Order Moellers low profile cap. What about the forward casting platform and how it attaches to the CC. Don't know if this would create a problem? Chris

Member Posts: 1925 Comments: 16 Joined: 05/02/08	Chris - Having owned a 1971 Nauset for 15 years, and having built both the console and forward platform (in solid teak) from scratch, I can say that raising the console 4" or so would not be a problem. The only connection between the platform and the lower console is where the two beams bolt on to the lower console side. It would actually be a great improvement to the boat, in my opinion, even though I did not do it at the time. Even the front seat detail would also work. The smart way to do this would be to simply build a new console base 4" taller, keeping everything else the same.

I haven't rebuilt the forward deck yet as I would like to have a custom composite model made, this will be next year. So there is def more room in the lower section of the console, however my worry isn't the height it's whether the gas tank will fit across the bottom with all of the cables and wiring that comes up through from the channel? If the moeller 12gal will fit that would be at the top of the list of options...

Member Posts: 1925 Comments: 16 Joined: 05/02/08	I think you are not understanding that TWO 12 gallon Moellers will fit under the console, one on each side with the long dimension bow to stern, with the cables running out of the tunnel, BETWEEN the tanks and up into the center of the console. Whaler used a drop-in round bar (wood closet rod) to kepp them in place and from sliding back underway. Edited by Finnegan on 04/16/14 - 2:54 PM

Well that sounds good to me however based on the dimensions I have (I will recheck them later) the 12gal Moeller will not fit lengthwise without hanging out 2". This is the model I am referring to Product # 630012LP.
